Chapter 25

After his tour and checking in with his team, Alex returned to his berth. The display on the wall above the fold-out desk showed a countdown: they had just over forty hours until they reached the Skandia system. There was plenty of time to catch up on his rest.

The bed folded out easily and had a ten centimeter-thick foam mattress. Clean sheets were waiting inside his locker. He made the bed, stripped out of his civilian clothes, and crawled into it. The lights were voice-activated. He turned them off but left the display screen on, which showed a view of space outside the ship. They were far enough from Arcadia and the dozens of solar-powered space stations in her ring of orbit that he could see hundreds of stars. They were mere pin pricks in the dark blanket of outer space, but there was something soothing about lying in the comfortable bed and listening to the low thrum of the ship’s engines, the only light being the glow of stars—even if it was an artificial replication of them.

The next thing Alex knew, he was waking up.

“Show me the timer to reach the Skandia system,” he said as he sat up on his bed.

The stars faded a little, and bright red numerals appeared. There was only twenty-six hours of flight time remaining. Alex realized he’d slept for fourteen hours straight. His stomach growled, and his muscles trembled as he stretched. After cleaning himself up, he went searching for food.

“You should really check your messages every once in a while,” Ash said, hurrying up behind him as he stepped into the lift.

“I was sleeping,” Alex said, but he pulled his Flex PIL from his pocket and snapped it onto his wrist.

The PIL activated, the screen coming to life. There were a variety of messages. Most were simple shipboard notifications, which he didn’t really care about, but there were a few from Ash and Nyx. He scrolled through them, only half-listening to Ash.

“The ship’s not bad,” she said. “Just a lot smaller than I expected. The controllers love it.”

Alex read the message from Nyx. She had already eaten but wanted to know when he woke up. He typed out a quick message and sent it back to her.

“How’s Sly?”

“Aggravated,” she said. “The doctor took off his bandages today, but he’s insisting that Sly have light therapy. He’ll be in the med center all day.”

It didn’t take long to reach level four, and Alex headed straight to the chow hall. Ash tagged along, but while he ordered himself a full breakfast, she settled for a protein shake. His tray of eggs, bacon, fruit, and pancakes looked like it was decades old. The eggs were scrambled but had a dull white color to them. The pancakes were wrinkled, and the fruit was bland and tasteless. He ate it all anyway and drank the orange-flavored beverage that tasted somewhere between water and actual juice.

“Missing the food on Arcadia yet?” Ash asked.

“It’s a trade-off,” he said. “I’d rather not be on such a crowded world.
